DIABETES MELLITUS AND ITS MANAGEMENT THROUGH AYURVEDA & SIDDHA MEDICINES

Diabetes is a multi-functional disorder resulting from lack of proper exercise, inappropriate food habits etc., thereby all these aspects point to ‘lifestyle disorder’. The statistics and numbers about diabetes mellitus is quite alarming as India is becoming the world’s diabetic capital in which 1 among 12 persons are affected with diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is a lifestyle disorder which always increases morbidity and early mortality through multi system failure. An increase in blood sugar levels affects different organs. Diabetes is also one of the major metabolic disorders with multiple etiology, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrate metabolism primarily resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Untreated high blood sugar in the long run can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys and other organs.
There are different medical systems in our country to solve health issues. Diabetes mellitus is also not different. It is managed by various disciplines of medical systems in their own methods, since it is a lifestyle disorders single remedy, or a single drug will not be an option for all the time. Even a single medical system is often failing to manage diabetes and its complications, in this scenario a comprehensive and novel approach is needed to solve the issue in the current diabetic management. A novel initiative for diabetic care by SANTHIGIRI HEALTHCARE AND RESEARCH ORGANIZATION for the management of diabetes with AYURVEDA AND SIDDHA medicines , and by different methods of lifestyle management including medicines, yoga , diet modification, panchakarma therapy etc.

AYURVEDA AND SIDDHA PERSPECTIVE OF DIABETES MELLITUS
Management of diabetes through ancient Indian medical systems like Ayurveda and Siddha is one among the oldest management concepts in the whole world. Diabetes in ayurveda is considered and categorized as PRAMEHA, which are a list of disorders characterized by increased outflow of urine with a bunch of abnormalities due to the imbalance of dhoshas inside the body. The main causes of prameha include increased intake of sweet taste with improper physical exercises and food habits. Excess food intake in an improper manner which falls in the category of ushna , snigdha and guru are the primary causes of the disease. Food and beverages that increase kapha, medhas and moothira were the etiology factors of prameha. The word prameha derived from Pra – means Excess & Meha – passing of urine. So the word Prameha literally means Increases outflow of urine in an abnormal manner with the derangement of body dhadhus which is abnormaly turbid, sweet, odoured and coloured. Other common causes of Prameha that are illustrated in ayurveda, and siddha texts are increased sleep in the morning time, lack of exercise, laziness, sedentary habits, consuming food and beverages which are cold, intake of sweet and fat rich diet.

COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES MELLITUS
Increased risk for diabetes is primarily associated with age, ethnicity, family history of diabetes, smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Diabetes-related complications—including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, neuropathy, blindness, and lower-extremity amputation are a significant cause of increased morbidity and mortality among people with diabetes. Diabetes can affect many different organ systems in the body and, over time, can lead to serious complications. Complications from diabetes can be classified as microvascular or macrovascular. Microvascular complications include nervous system damage (neuropathy), renal system damage (nephropathy) and eye damage (retinopathy).Macrovascular complications include cardiovascular disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Peripheral vascular disease may lead to bruises or injuries that do not heal, gangrene, and, ultimately, amputation. The prevalence of microvascular complications chronic kidney disease (defined as microalbuminuria), foot problems (defined as foot/toe amputation, foot lesion, or numbness), and eye damage (defined as being told that diabetes had affected the eyes or had retinopathy) are much higher than the prevalence of macrovascular complications (heart attack, chest pain, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, and stroke). Complications can be either episodic (eg, foot ulcers or infections) that can be treated and recur numerous times or progressive (eg, nephropathy), which usually begin relatively mildly, but over time result in further damage to the organ and greater loss of functionality that is generally irreversible.
